Wool felt is one of the oldest textile materials in human history — predating woven fabrics entirely. It is not woven or knitted. It is made by pressing wool fibres together under heat and moisture until they bond into a dense, unified sheet. The result is something that holds its shape without lining, does not fray at cut edges, and softens only at its surface.
The Material
Wool felt is a non-woven fabric made from natural wool fibres, matted and compressed until they interlock. Unlike canvas or corduroy, it has no grain, no stretch, and no raw edges. It is inherently structured — a quality that makes it exceptionally well suited to bags that need to hold their form without additional interfacing or support.
Why YACHT® Uses It
Most bags require internal structure — a sewn-in frame, a stiffened panel, an interfaced base — to hold their shape. Wool felt does not. The material carries itself. This means cleaner construction, fewer layers, and a bag that is lighter than its structure would suggest.
Wool is also a natural insulator and is inherently resistant to moisture and odour. A wool felt laptop sleeve protects both from impact and from the elements. It does the job without being asked to do more than it was made for.
How It Ages
Wool felt wears gracefully. The surface develops a gentle sheen at points of regular contact over time, and the overall feel becomes more supple with handling. It does not pill significantly in bag applications. A wool felt sleeve or pouch used daily will look better at two years than most synthetic alternatives look at two months.
Care
Spot clean with cold water and a small amount of wool-safe detergent. Air dry flat — never machine wash or tumble dry. Do not wring or twist; reshape gently while damp. Brush lightly with a soft brush to restore surface texture if needed. Keep away from prolonged direct heat.
The Range
Our wool felt range includes laptop sleeves, utility pouches, and structured totes – natural carry for the person who values what a material actually does.
