Tightly woven cotton, made to be carried. The most honest material in the YACHT range, and the one everything else is measured against.
The Material
YACHT canvas is 12-ounce, plain-weave cotton — the weight, weave, and finish chosen specifically for bags that hold real weight. Twelve ounces refers to the fabric’s density per square yard; it is the weight at which canvas stops being soft and starts being structural. Below 10oz, canvas slumps under load, the weave loosens, and the bag loses shape within months. At 12oz and above, the fabric stands up to its work — groceries, books, a laptop, a weekend’s worth of essentials.
We weave our canvas from natural cotton fibres, undyed by default, dyed with intention when colour is part of the design. The weave is tight enough to resist abrasion and loose enough to breathe. Cut, double-stitched on every load-bearing seam, and finished cleanly inside and out. There are no shortcuts in canvas. The bag is exactly as good as the fabric and the stitching, and we control both.
Why YACHT Uses It
Canvas is the most democratic bag material ever made. It carries groceries and laptops, goes to the market and to the meeting. Anyone can make a canvas tote. Very few make one worth keeping. The difference is the weight of the fabric, the density of the stitching, and the discipline to not compromise on either.
For YACHT, canvas is also the brand’s thesis — quiet, considered, made to last. It does not announce itself. It does not chase trends. It carries what you ask it to, then waits for the next day. This is exactly the kind of object a YACHT customer wants to own.
How It Ages
This is the part most brands do not tell you. Canvas does not look the same in year three as it does on day one — and this is its best quality.
Over months of use, the natural cotton fibres soften slightly, the structure relaxes into the shape of what you carry most often, and small marks accumulate where life has happened — a coffee shop counter, a train seat, a car boot. None of this is damage. It is character, the visible record of a bag being used as it was designed to be used. A YACHT canvas tote bought today will not look new in three years. It will look like yours.
Care
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. For deeper cleaning, hand wash in cool water with gentle detergent and air dry flat — never tumble dry, never bleach. Reshape while damp. With reasonable care, a YACHT canvas bag holds its structure and finish for many years.
